THE NINTENDO 64 LIBRARY GOES DEEPER
My thread from X, as posted.
When people talk about the N64 it's usually the same few games that get brought up.
The Nintendo 64 turns 30 today in North America. There's a lot more to the library than the games everybody already knows.
No Mario 64. No Ocarina. No GoldenEye. No Mario Kart. Everyone played those.
Here's the 10 you should play this weekend.🧵
The waves actually move in this one, so the same turn can play out different every lap.
It came out about a month after the console did.
Spend some time in Dolphin Park before you start racing.

You needed the Expansion Pak to play most of it. Without one you only got a small piece of the game.
The Combat Simulator lets you add computer bots to a match if you don't have three other people to play with.

This is the podrace from the movie turned into a full racing game, with Watto's junkyard between races where you spend your winnings on parts.
Hold the boost too long and your engines will catch fire, at least until you buy better parts.

Nintendo's snowboarding game from 1998 is slower and heavier than the other snowboarding games from back then.
Ice and powder handle differently, so you have to pay attention to what you're riding on.

It launched here the same day as Super Mario 64 but didn't get close to the same attention.
Most of the game is flying a hang glider or a rocket belt over Little States, a small version of the U.S. that has Mario's face on Mount Rushmore.

This is Rare's home version of Killer Instinct 2.
It has the combo breakers and ultras from the arcade, plus a training mode that shows you how to do the combos step by step.
The stages are 3D with a camera that moves around during fights.

The hills send your car way up in the air.
There are shortcuts hidden all over every track that take a lot of runs to find.
Crash hard enough and the car blows up, then drops you back on the road a second later.

Eurocom made this one only for the N64 in 1999.
It's a third person Duke game where he goes back in time chasing aliens, from the Old West to Victorian London.

This was AKI's last wrestling game on the N64.
A lot of wrestling fans still call it the best one ever made. Championship mode changes depending on whether you win or lose your matches, so a title run can go a lot of different ways.
People are still making mods for it more than 25 years later.

Factor 5's Star Wars flight game takes place between A New Hope and Empire.
On the Hoth mission you trip AT-ATs with the tow cable on the snowspeeder.
It was also one of the first games to use the Expansion Pak for higher resolution.

That's the ten.
Happy 30th to the Nintendo 64.
ALSO ON THE SHELF · 35 GAMES
Leaving out the games my thread names as the ones everybody played (“No Mario 64. No Ocarina. No GoldenEye. No Mario Kart.”) and the ten above.
Left out: Super Mario 64, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, GoldenEye 007, Mario Kart 64.
