Pilotwings 64 (N64)
When people talk about the Nintendo 64 launch, Super Mario 64 is usually the only game that comes up.
Pilotwings 64 came out right alongside it 30 years ago today, as one of only two games you could buy for the system on day one.
It's a flight game where every mission is a test you get graded on, whether you're in the hang glider or setting the rocket belt down on a landing pad without overshooting it.
Hang gliding is the best part of the game, just floating along and lazily working your way through the rings with the music playing. Dan Hess created an amazing soundtrack for this game.
The 3D world is very impressive for a game from 1996, with Little States giving you a shrunk down version of the whole United States to fly around.
Out of the two N64 launch titles, Pilotwings 64 is the better game.
I rate this one a 4.5 out of 5.
Pilotwings 64
It launched here the same day as Super Mario 64 but didn't get close to the same attention.
Most of the game is flying a hang glider or a rocket belt over Little States, a small version of the U.S. that has Mario's face on Mount Rushmore.
