THE SNES LIBRARY GOES DEEPER

My thread from X, as posted.

The SNES library is a lot deeper than the handful of games that get named every time somebody brings it up. The Super Nintendo launched in North America on August 23, 1991. No Mario. No Donkey Kong. No Zelda. Everyone has played those. Here are ten SNES games worth playing instead to help celebrate the 35th anniversary of my all time favorite console.

Michael Jordan: Chaos in the Windy City

1Michael Jordan: Chaos in the Windy City

A mad scientist kidnaps the Chicago Bulls players and Michael Jordan goes in alone to save them. Equipped with a duffel bag of trick basketballs. He's in a tank top and basketball shorts the entire time, dribbling the ball constantly as you move throughout the game. This is one of the weirdest but best platformers on the system.

College Slam

2College Slam

Acclaim took NBA Jam, swapped in college programs, and shipped it. Two on two, catching fire, dunks from the logo. I played this one more than NBA Jam. University of North Carolina was my team.

Primal Rage

3Primal Rage

Seven prehistoric monsters beating each other across a wrecked Earth while tiny humans worship at the edge of the screen. You can eat them mid fight to get health back. Every character is stop motion clay, digitized frame by frame.

Taz-Mania

4Taz-Mania

Taz is hunting a giant seabird egg and destroys most of Tasmania looking for it. He eats bombs, cars, cactus, whatever is in front of him. The spin is the whole game. You hold it down, tear through a level, and let the game sort out what happened.

Jungle Book

5Disney's The Jungle Book

Some of the prettiest animation on the console sitting on top of one of the hardest platformers on it. You have to find enough gems before the game will even let you leave a level, so you're hunting the whole stage while everything in it is trying to kill you. Kaa, the monkeys, the snakes in the trees. None of it lets up.

Aladdin

6Aladdin

Capcom's take on the movie. Aladdin never picks up a weapon in this one. You bounce off heads, throw apples, and climb everything, so the whole game is built around movement instead of combat. Agrabah, the Cave of Wonders, the carpet ride. It hits every part of the movie you'd want it to.

Animaniacs

7Animaniacs

Yakko, Wakko and Dot move as one line across the Warner Bros lot stealing movie props, and you rotate who's in front depending on what's in the way. Ralph the security guard is always about half a screen behind you. The game is fun. If you're an Animaniacs fan, this one is for you.

Bram Stoker's Dracula

8Bram Stoker's Dracula

Sony Imagesoft cashed a movie license and then actually made something. Fog, wolves, gaslit streets, and a difficulty curve that does not care that this is a licensed game. This one creeped me out as a kid. It wasn't the enemies, it was the way the whole thing looked and sounded while you were walking through it.

Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster Busts Loose!

9Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster Busts Loose!

Konami at full power. Buster dashes, slides and dropkicks through a western train robbery and a sci fi stage, and then there's a football level where you juke an entire defense of Perfectos. Every stage is built like its own cartoon episode instead of a level, and Konami never phoned in a single one of them.

Ken Griffey Jr. Presents Major League Baseball

10Ken Griffey Jr. Presents Major League Baseball

Real teams with real logos, and every player except Griffey is made up. He's out there in a lineup of invented names hitting balls into orbit and robbing home runs at the wall. I'm still upset my mom made me turn this game off when I was in a 22 inning game. She had to return it to Blockbuster. The greatest baseball game of the 90s.

Thirty five years later and it's always the same five games people recommend. The SNES has a lot more than that in it, and every one of these is still worth playing today.
