Star Fox

Honest and Unpopular Reviews No. 45 Star Fox (Super Nintendo) Just about every game on the Super Nintendo looked like it was a Super Nintendo game. That changed in 1993 when Star Fox showed up. This was the first SNES game I ever rented at Blockbuster and I remember it like it happened yesterday. I was crazy excited when I picked up this game and the 5 minute car ride home felt like an eternity. Immediately after getting home and popping the cart in, I just couldn't believe the graphics. I was absolutely blown away. Nothing else on that system was doing what Star Fox was doing. The Super FX chip inside the cartridge is what made it possible. It's also why the frame rate drops the way it does when the screen gets busy. But 10 year old me didn't care about any of that. I was just super fascinated by the 3D obstacle flying in this game. I'd never played anything like this before. I'd be lying though if I didn't say I rage quit a few times as both a 10 year old and someone in his early 40s. This game was hard. It's still hard. It's one of my all time favorite games despite its difficulty being through the roof. Nintendo has remade this game about 47 times since. Star Fox 64 was the first remake in 1997, then the 3DS version was the remake of the remake, and Zero did it again on the Wii U. And now the Switch 2 got its own remake. Same story every time and the only thing that changes are the graphics. Star Fox 64 gets called the best one in the series and I've never agreed with that. The SNES original is my favorite and the best one made, Star Fox Adventures is second, and Star Fox 64 is third. I rate this one a 5 out of 5.

Impossible matchups No. 3 Star Fox (SNES) vs. Mortal Kombat (Sega Genesis) Both came out in 1993. One got called a technical miracle and the other got called a threat to children. I played Star Fox in the early 90s and nothing else on the SNES looked like it. I still think it's the best game in that series, ahead of Star Fox 64. My first time with Mortal Kombat was the arcade cabinet at my local pizza place. I thought it was awesome. Which one was the better 1993 game?
