X-Men Origins: Wolverine [Uncaged Edition]

ON MY LISTS

WHAT I'VE POSTED ABOUT IT ON X

Honest and Unpopular Reviews No. 38 X-Men Origins: Wolverine (Xbox 360/PS3) By the 2000s, movie tie-in games were starting to die down. Not every movie was getting a game release like the 80s and 90s produced. But we still got a few big ones that were major hits: the Spider-Man trilogy, Peter Jackson's King Kong, and X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Batman Begins got one in 2005 as well. This one released with the movie in 2009. A lot of people will tell you the movie is the low point of Fox's X-Men run. However, the game isn't, and it's massively better than the film. The best part of Wolverine is how violent it is. This isn't your typical hack and slash game. The Uncaged Edition released on the Xbox 360 and PS3 with an M rating, and the rating absolutely gets used. Bad guys get ripped apart. You can put a bad guy through spikes or even a forklift blade. The violence is what sets this game apart from previous superhero games. Those of you who bought this game on the Wii or PS2 got a completely different version. It was made by a different studio with all of the gruesome violence stripped out. The melee combat in X-Men Origins: Wolverine is incredibly smooth. Attacks chain into each other without making you memorize a string to get anything out of it. The lunge puts him across a room with the claws out before the bad guy has turned around, and the feral senses light up the weak points on whatever you're about to take apart. Very well done. The way Wolverine is able to take damage in this game is comic book accurate. He gets shot up, loses his clothes, then his skin, and then there's adamantium showing through like he's the T-800 after getting half his face blown off. Seventeen years ago a studio working against a movie's release date got all of that right. Insomniac's Wolverine is out on the 15th and the designs don't look like the comics or the cartoon or the movies or any game before it. I don't know what the excuse is. If you haven't played the 2009 one, add it to your list before you spend money on that. I rate this one a 4.5 out of 5.
