Streets of Rage 2

Impossible matchups No. 14 GoldenEye 007 vs. Streets of Rage 2 They came out five years apart, and neither one has anything in common with the other except that both still get called the greatest game ever made in their genre. Which one was the better 90s game?

Honest and Unpopular Reviews No. 44 Streets of Rage 2 (Sega Genesis) Going back to the early to mid 1990s, the most popular games seem to be beat 'em ups. These games were everywhere and on every system. Most of them were unfortunately the same game wearing a different coat of paint. Streets of Rage 2 was never one of those. I didn't get around to playing this one until years later since we never owned a Genesis growing up. Once I finally got around to playing SoR2, I see why everyone raves about it. Axel is the guy I usually go with. He’s right down the middle. He's not fast, not slow, but he hits hard enough to keep enemies off you. Plus his name is cool. The other three are nothing like him or each other. Blaze has the best throws in the game, Max moves like a brick and takes a massive chunk of health off with his suplex, and Skate rolls all over the screen landing a pile of weak hits that add up. The special moves take health away when you use it, so you're paying for it in a game that's already hitting you plenty. Yuzo Koshiro did the music and it's the first thing anybody brings up about this game. Streets of Rage 2 is one of the greatest games of all time but I still can't rank it above Turtles in Time. That's the number 1 beat 'em up ever made. I rate SoR2 a 5 out of 5.

Streets of Rage 2 or Turtles in Time? We were strictly a Nintendo house growing up. No Genesis, so Turtles in Time is the one I actually put hours into. I didn't play Streets of Rage 2 until years later and I still think Turtles in Time is the better game. What was your beat em up growing up?

2. Streets of Rage 2 The best beat 'em up Sega ever made. Axel, Blaze, Max, Koshiro at the peak of his powers, a difficulty curve that never once cheats you. On almost any list this is number one. It had the misfortune of sharing a genre with the game above it.
