Halo: Reach (Xbox 360)
Remember Reach
My all time favorite Halo game released 16 years ago today.
Most of us have bought a console for one specific game at some point, with the rest of the library being stuff that showed up over the next few years.
I got out of the Navy in June 2010 and bought a Wii almost immediately. That was entertaining for a little while, and then it wasn't, and what I actually wanted was to play Halo again.
In October of 2010 I went to the Meijer in Rolling Meadows, IL and walked out with an Xbox 360, ODST and Halo Reach. Got home, ran through ODST pretty quickly, then started on Reach.
The campaign didn't take me long either. After that it was multiplayer with one of my best friends, a guy I worked at Walmart with before I joined the Navy. He was in Northern California, I was just outside of Chicago, and we were on Reach together just about every single day until Halo 4 came out. We played other things in between, Battlefield 3 and Halo 3, and neither one of them ever had us the way Reach did.
The map designs were perfect. Whenever the two of us felt like being irritated we'd jump into a round of SWAT with the DMR. One shot and you're dead. It was irritating and hilarious at the same time.
The progression system is the best thing in the game. I finished Reach as a General Grade 1. This is what modern day gaming is missing. Instead of unlocking items from playing the game, you buy everything. I hate it. (Looking at you, Halo Infinite with your $12 shade of blue.)
The assassinations were an awesome addition. I can still hear that multiplayer announcer saying assassination, or killtrocity, or my personal favorite, killamanjaro.
My only real negative is the armor abilities. Outside of the jetpack they were pretty useless.
The ending to the campaign was sad. You keep fighting until you can't fight anymore.
I don't know how many hours I have in this game but I'd bet it's in the thousands. This was the last great Halo game and Bungie went out with a bang.
I rate Halo Reach a 4.5 out of 5.
