ON MY LISTS

WHAT I'VE POSTED ABOUT IT ON X

Impossible matchups No. 17 Super Mario 64 vs. Final Fantasy VII They came out less than a year apart on rival consoles, one a platformer and the other a turn-based RPG. Which one was the better game?

Impossible matchups No. 10 Halo 2 vs. Final Fantasy VII They came out seven years apart on different generations of consoles, and both still get named as the best game on the system they were on. Halo 2 is one of the greatest FPS games ever made. Final Fantasy VII gets ranked as one of the greatest JRPGs of all time. Which one was the better game?

Overrated Game of the Day! Final Fantasy VII (PS1) Final Fantasy VII shows up near or at the top of best game ever made lists constantly and I've never understood how it got there. I bought it in 2001 because guys I worked with at KFC wouldn't stop telling me it was the greatest thing ever made. That's literally the only reason why I bought it. The story isn't great. A lot of the Final Fantasy die-hards describe it like it's some untouchable piece of writing, and I played the whole thing waiting for the part that was supposed to floor me. It never showed up. The game was boring. Finishing it felt like an assignment I had to get through rather than a game I wanted to keep playing. Especially when I had Gran Turismo, Mega Man Legends, Ready 2 Rumble, and Tomorrow Never Dies sitting right there next to the PS1 that were all infinitely more enjoyable to play. Calling Final Fantasy VII overrated isn't a hot take. It's the truth.

2. Final Fantasy VII Every list of the best games ever made has this one on it somewhere. I bought it because people I worked with told me it was the best game ever made. It bored me then, and the remake didn't change my mind.

Impossible matchups No. 2 GoldenEye 007 vs. Final Fantasy VII Both came out in 1997. Both get called the game that defined that year. Kids from my neighborhood would come over on a Saturday and we'd spend hours on four player GoldenEye. I didn't get to Final Fantasy VII until 2001. I ran through the whole thing once and was bored the entire time. Which one was the better 1997 game?

Final Fantasy VII or Zelda Ocarina of Time? I rented Ocarina of Time from Blockbuster when it came out and kept it the whole week. Link running around a 3D open world was really something else. Fun in 1998 but hasn't aged well at all. Final Fantasy VII I didn't play until years later when I finally had a PlayStation. Everybody told me it was the best game ever made. I couldn't get into it. Which one was the better game?

Metal Gear Solid or Final Fantasy VII? Final Fantasy VII was one of the first games I bought for my PlayStation. All my coworkers at KFC said it was the best game ever made. I bought it because of that. I was so bored. Metal Gear Solid was a game I found browsing the PS games shelf at Fry's Electronics. I thought it looked interesting. Turned out to be one of the best games I ever played. Which one was the better PlayStation game?

Honest and Unpopular Reviews No. 15 Final Fantasy VII (PS1) I've played Final Fantasy VII, I've played the remake, and both times I came away thinking the same thing. This game bored me. Midgar is the best part and it's over in a few hours. After that you're on a world map walking in a direction until the screen does the swirl and drops you into another fight you didn't ask for. The fights are a menu. You pick attack, you watch it happen, you pick it again. Summoning Knights of the Round takes over a minute and there's no skip button. That's not gameplay, that's a screensaver with a damage number at the end. People call this the greatest story ever told in a game. Most of it is characters standing still while text scrolls, and the pacing after disc one never recovers. The materia system is the one thing I'll defend without hesitation. Being able to strip a character down and rebuild them into something completely different was ahead of anything else on the console, and nothing since has done it better. Three discs, forty hours, and the parts I actually remember all happened in the first city. The remake had a chance to fix it. Instead they took Midgar, the one section that works, and stretched it into a full game. I rate this one a 3 out of 5.
